On average sod will last around 48 hours on a pallet. This will change depending on the temperature. Colder weather will allow the sod to last considerably longer while warmer temperatures will stress sod on a pallet much quicker.

Sod can be installed any time of year. However, it thrives in cooler weather, ideally somewhere between 50 to 65 degrees. Fall is typically the best time to lay sod since the weather is getting colder but there is still plenty of time for the sod to root before winter hits. Try to avoid laying sod in the heat of summer because high temperatures stress the sod much more quickly.

In short, yes you can. The only downside to planting on existing grass is that it will take longer for the sod to root and will require more watering for the first few weeks. The upside is that, with time, the existing grass will create a very fertile environment for the new sod to flourish in.
